Burns Avenue, main street in downtown San Ignacio.

Hawkesworth Bridge spans the macal river and bridges the twin towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena. Built in 1949 the Hawkesworth Bridge is the Oldest suspension bridge in Belize.

Having only one lane for cars and another for pedestrians, in earlier days this was the sight of numerous stand offs as motorist approaching the bridge from opposite direction would race towards the middle of the bridge. The unwritten rule was that whoever got to the middle of the bridge first had the right of way. Of course too many times both motorist would arrive at the same time and a stand off would occur. And too often times neither driver would yield until the police were called.

Sacred Heart Church (Roman Catholic)

Wooden Bridge. Originally built to carry traffic across the Macal river while the Hawkesworth bridge was being maintained. The bridge has remained to this day; surviving both hurricane floods and Belizean drivers.

This is a one way bridge towards San Ignacio. It is not unusual for a driver to lay in waiting on the other side and then sneak across in the opposite direction in order to avoid the longer drive across the Hawkesworth Bridge.
